The (or Poste des Attakapas ) was a critical 18th-century colonial trading post and administrative center in Louisiana that evolved into the modern-day city of St. Martinville . Named after the indigenous Atakapa (or Ishak) people who originally inhabited the region, it served as a gateway for settlement and trade along the Bayou Teche. Key Historical Significance
