Vince Clarke wrote it as a peace offering to Depeche Mode, but after they declined it, he teamed up with Moyet. Their chemistry was instant, despite the duo only being together for 18 months.

It preserves the "basement" feel of the original recording at Blackwing Studios while cleaning up tape hiss and leveling the dynamics.
